Skills Development Courses

The following courses in mathematics, writing, and reading are offered as part of the academic support services for students. Cost is included in tuition.

Mathematics

• LSK 086 - Collllege Math Skills
  In this course, you will develop math and algebra reasoning skills. Special attention is given to solving word problems and algebraic applications. You will also develop specific math study skills. (3 hrs./wk.)
• LSK 087 - Math 101 Tutorial
  This weekly 30-minute appointment with a math specialist is designed to reinforce mathematical concepts and build your math confidence.

Writing

• LSK 065 – Writing Skills I
  This course will assist you in learning the grammar and content skills required for successful college writing before you register for ENG 111. This class meets three times a week for 50 minutes.
• LSK 066 – College Writing Skills II
  In this course, you will write drafts of several essays and practice extensive self-editing. Such training will help refine your writing skills and promote thesis development. This class meets twice a week for 90 minutes.
• LSK 067 - College Writing Workshop
  LSK 067 is a class consisting of a series of workshops designed to help students improve their academic writing, with an emphasis on thesis development, organization, clarity, sentence structure, and mechanics. This class meets once per week for 50 minutes.
• LSK 068 - College Writing (Transfers)
  LSK 068 is a tutorial for transfer students only. Professional tutors provide support designed to meet the student’s individual needs. Specific areas such as thesis development, sentence structure, and documentation are addressed in 30-60 minute sessions held once per week.
• Graduate Writing Tutoring
  Professional writing tutors conference with graduate students on papers, theses, and projects in APA format. (30 min. - 1hr. per/wk.)

Reading

• LSK 074 - Reading & Study Skills
  This course helps you to develop the advanced reading and study skills necessary for success in college. (3 hrs./wk.)
• LSK 077 - Content Reading
  This weekly 30-minute appointment with a reading specialist is designed to help you better understand the material in your courses and prepare for tests.
• LSK 078 - Vocabulary Enrichment
  This weekly 50-minute seminar is designed to expand your vocabulary so that you will better understand the reading material and lectures in college.

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

SI is offered for students who are enrolled in Psychology 101 (LSK 075), Biology 107 (LSK 076), and Chemistry 114 (LSK 072). Learning Center staff will clarify course content and help students develop test-taking strategies, study skills, and note-taking directly related to these courses.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Instruction is provided to help ESL students understand, speak, read, and write English. Individual conferences and/or small group sessions are offered.
